Lynwood Unified to Use Federal Grant for New Health Center

Over $280,000 will be used for this project.

The Lynwood Unified School District (LUSD) will start later this year to renovate classrooms at Lynwood Middle School in order to construct the first school health center in the district.

This center is being made to deliver medical and mental health services to Lynwood families.

The LUSD will be able to carry out this project thanks to the attainment of the School-Based Health Centers Capital Grant (SBHCC), of which  $280,770 was allocated to Lynwood. The federal grant was obtained with the help of the JWCH Institute, Inc., a non-profit healthcare organization.

“As a school district, it’s important that we take a holistic approach to helping students succeed, and connecting them to the healthcare they need is part of that effort,” said Briseida Gonzalez, an LUSD board of education member in a recnet press-release. “This is a wonderful opportunity for our families and I want to make sure that we continue the work we’re doing.”

The 900-square-foot space within the chosen classrooms has not had any sort of renovation since they were first constructed in 1996.

Masada Homes, a mental health services nonprofit, is currently utilizing part of the space for the counseling services that they provide to students of the LUSD.

However, more work needs to be done in order to meet the requirements needed when building a medical clinic.
