LAPD Honors Artemis Defense Institute for its commitment to improving officer safety

Artemis Defense Institute, a tactical gun training facility, was honored by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Operations-West Bureau, Surveillance Detail for its commitment and dedication to improving law enforcement tactics and enhancing officer safety.

Artemis Defense Institute offers real world training with some of the most advanced technology available that tests the trainee’s will to survive. During the training, officers develop and hone skills that teach them how to engage with a shooter when their body is being pushed to its limits, how to overcome tunnel vision where officers can make mistakes, and how to communicate with other officers and work within the agency’s policies and procedures for a more realistic training environment.

“Training in a realistic environment is a key component of our training because it allows officers to develop a combat mindset that prepares them for those high-stress scenarios they may encounter on the job,” said Steven Lieberman, owner and lead instructor of Artemis Defense Institute.

The simulated training most officers receive is based around a single 100-degree simulator, whereas Artemis offers three separate simulators that encourage trainees to shoot on the move for a more immersive experience. Another unique aspect of the training Artemis offers is the debriefing process where officers review and analyze a recording of the training and look for areas that need improvement.

At Artemis, officers also use a device known as Threat Fire that deploys 80,000 volts of electricity to simulate being hit or shot by targets’ return fire. In other simulated training scenarios, being shot signifies the end of the scenario but at Artemis, trainees have to reengage with the shooter as they would in a real-life shooting.
