LAUSD Board Member Visits Southeast Middle School, Students Demonstrate Digital Literacy Knowledge

On Thursday, March 27, LAUSD Board Member Bennett Kayser visited South Gate’s Southeast Middle School to view live demonstrations of the ESA Digital Living Project, an interactive, new-media learning platform designed to prepare students for the digital world, and hear from students firsthand about the important digital literacy knowledge they’d gained.

Board Member Kayser joined EverFi, Inc., a leading education technology organization and the Southeast Community Development Corporation (SCDC), a non-profit organization, to recognize the school for pioneering this next-generation resource. The EverFi-powered platform is available to schools and CBOs in the LA area, including all those in South Gate, at no cost thanks to a partnership from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the U.S. trade association representing computer and video game publishers, and the ESA Foundation.

“I am so proud of our community partners who have allowed us to bring such an important event to Southeast Middle School,” said Board Member Kayser. “In a world of social media and constant communication, digital literacy and citizenship are of the utmost importance. As a teacher, we are constantly preparing our students to adapt and succeed in the 21st century marketplace, and through the efforts of partners such as Entertainment Software Association Foundation, EverFi, and the Southeast Community Development Corporation we are ensuring their success.”

Southeast Middle School is one of 40 Los Angeles area schools currently participating in the program, and 400 of its students have already completed the course as an integrated part of its technology curriculum.

The 4-hour online curriculum covers a wide range of topics including digital footprint, privacy, security, responsible social networking, cyberbullying, and digital relationships. “Video games can effectively and efficiently teach children important critical thinking skills and foundational concepts like responsibility,” said Erik Huey, senior vice president at ESA. “We are proud to partner with EverFi and look forward to helping improve the lives of children across the area.”
