Lynwood High School Seniors to Get a Taste of Real-World Finances

Lynwood High School seniors will get a taste of what it means to be financially independent in the real world when they attend a Financial Reality Seminar on June 6.

Under the program, called Mad City Money, LHS seniors will engage in a four-hour hands-on simulation where they take on the role of an adult. They will be given jobs with a set income, a family and debt.

During the simulation, 120 seniors will have to follow the scenario they've been assigned  and  visit merchants to select housing, transportation, food, household necessities, clothing, child care and other various wants and needs, all while deciding what they can and can’t afford. A credit union will be available for students to offer advice about saving and loan options.

WHEN:   Friday, June 6, 2014
               8 a.m. to noon

WHERE: Lynwood High School
              4050 E. Imperial Hwy
              Lynwood, CA 90262

In an effort to help students understand the repercussions of their spending decisions as they reach graduation and adulthood, Lynwood Unified is partnering with the Center for Financial Empowerment to put on the event. The Irwindale-based Center is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate underserved youth and families in the principles of personal finance. Mad City Money will allow participants to make mistakes – and learn the consequences of their decisions – in a realistic, but safe, environment.
