Movies and a Market: City of Lynwood Hosts its Farmer's Market and Movies in the Park Series, Starting Thursday, June 19, 2014

The fun is doubling up this summer as two of the City of Lynwood’s major summer events are being launched on the same day, at the same park, with the same intention – to encourage families to get out of the house, enjoy the outdoors, eat healthier, and spend quality time together because it’s true what they say, families that eat and watch movies together, stay together. Well, that’s not exactly how the saying goes, but the message behind it is the same as two of the City’s major departments – the Community Development Department and the Recreation and Community Services Department - have joined forces this year to bring to the community 12 family fun-filled Thursdays this summer that combine the City’s brand new Farmer’s Market with the City’s beloved, and highly anticipated Movies in the Park Series.

Lynwood residents and passers-by can expect a packed house at Yvonne Burke/Ham Park every Thursday, between June 19, 2014 and September 4, 2014, from 4 to 10 p.m. With an expectancy of more than 400 people, the Farmer’s Market kicks off our family fun-Thursdays at 4 p.m. with an array of fresh produce, baked goods, and arts and crafts vendors. The City of Lynwood last year approved a pilot Farmer’s Market and it was a huge success. Brought back by popular demand, the Farmer’s Market this year will include more fresh produce vendors, more food vendors and even vendors that sell flavored coffees, nuts, popcorn treats, tamales and shaved ice. Set up in the parking lot, this year’s Farmer’s Market promises to bring the community quality vendors that sell quality foods and products. With the Farmer’s Market, the City aims to provide an avenue for business exposure while giving residents a variety of healthy foods, both raw and prepared, to eat and enjoy.

The array of freshly cooked foods, and fresh produce, and sweet treats sold at the Farmer’s Market complete the family fun evening for those looking to enjoy the Movies in the Park Series as well. For 12 consecutive Thursdays this summer, families are invited to bring their lawn chairs and blankets to watch a movie under the stars on a giant 30 by 35 feet high inflatable screen, specifically created for outdoor projections.

The Movies in the Park Series begins on June 19, 2014 in conjunction with the Farmer’s Market, except movies don’t start until after the sun sets at 7:45 p.m. Opening the series will be the year’s most popular Disney film, “Frozen,” and will be followed by “Despicable Me 2” on June 26, and “The Nut Job” on July 3.

There will be a total of 12 Farmer’s Markets and Movies in the Park nights through September 4, 2014. The City of Lynwood’s Summer family fun Thursdays will provide multiple benefits to the community, including recreational opportunities, access to healthy food options, and it will compliment the City’s efforts to encourage healthy, active lifestyles in Lynwood as part of its participation in the state-wide Healthy Cities Initiative.
