Hazardous Waste Collected at South Gate Park

L.A. County residents were able to dispose of, at no cost to them, hazardous household items such as batteries, motor oil and paint.

Old microwaves, televisions and computers were among the myriad items dropped off at South Gate Park Saturday, during the annual Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Roundup.

The event, which came a day before Earth Day, was presented by the Department of Public Works and Sanitation Districts of L.A. County.

The intention was to provide county residents in the southeast area with a safe, legal way to dispose of such waste.

"Most of the stuff we get is paint, flammable and water-based, [and] we don't take in biohazardous waste, explosives or business waste," said Juan Sanchez, project manager for PSC which was contracted by the county to carry out the event.

Once collected, material will be dispersed to various facilities for disposal.
