The South Gate Police Department (SGPD) has just informed Patch of a botched carjacking that took place near the corner of Firestone Boulevard and Garfield Avenue in South Gate.

The incident, which happened at approximately 11:00 p.m. on June 11, 2013, involved a 22-year-old woman who was held at gunpoint by a suspect attempting to steal her car.

“[She] was approached by a male Hispanic who displayed a handgun and demanded her keys,” said Sargent Jonathan Sekiya of the SGPD. “As he began to drive away, she got into the car with him.”

The SGPD told Patch that a scuffle is said to have ensued between the woman and the alleged carjacker when both were inside the vehicle, which continued to move across a parking lot.

“She was able to turn the car off,” said Sgt. Sekiya. “[The suspect] got out off the car and left.”
