Four New Restaurants to Open in South Gate

The restaurateurs are in the process of obtaining permits and carrying out construction work.

The culinary scene in South Gate has received some harsh criticism from both its residents and restaurateurs. This is perhaps why local foodies are bound to have some thoughts on the four new restaurants that are in the process of opening establishments within South Gate.

In a recent interview with Patch, Steve Lefever, South Gate's Director of Community Development, provided some details about the new businesses.

Among the new restaurants, which are all in the process of doing necessary prep-work, is an establishment owned by the proprietors of the Downey Brewing Company.

“They are not calling it Downey Brewing Company,” said Lefever. “They are giving it its own name.”

The people behind this project are currently renovating the space chosen for their establishment, as well as obtaining the required permits. According to Lefever, this restaurant will be located at 3905 Tweedy Boulevard, where the former Sizzler once stood.

South Gate can also expect a Waba Grill Teriyaki House near the intersection of Tweedy Boulevard and Otis Street.  Renovations are currently being carried out by the proprietors in preparation for an opening, said Lefever.

Two other asian inspired restaurants are also in the process of doing work within their locations at the El Paseo shopping complex on Firestone Boulevard.

One of the restaurants will be called Mt8848 (which stands for Mt. Everest), and is expected to serve a fusion type cuisine that includes Nepalese, Indian, Tibetan and European dishes. The location of the restaurant will be next to the Sam's Club at El Paseo.

There is also currently a Thai restaurant being built near the Starbucks franchise at El Paseo, said Lefever.

No opening dates were provided to Patch as they are yet unknown. Updates on the progress of these restaurants will be published as soon as more information becomes available.

What do you think of these restaurants? Are there any other restaurants you would like to see in South Gate?
