Helados La Tapatia Ice Cream Products Recalled Due to Possible Health Risks

Helados La Tapatia, a large ice-cream distributor, is voluntarily recalling its ice cream, popsicles, fruit bars, fruit cups and bolis due to possible health risks, the Monterey County Health Department has announced.

While no illnesses have been reported from the products of as Thursday, the goods may be linked to listeria monocytogenes, county health officials said. The infection can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease.

Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea, according to county health officials.

The products from the Fresno-based company were distributed through Arizona, California, Nevada, Washington, Guam and Canada under the brand names Helados La Tapatia and Icesations, county health officials reported.

Production of the items has been suspended as the Food and Drug Administration and Helados La Tapatia investigate the source of the issue.

People who have purchased the products are asked to return the items to the store they were purchased in exchange for a full refund, county health officials said.

Customers with questions are asked to call the company Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at (559) 441-1105 or (855) 893-1171.
