New Shopping Center Project Underway

A developer has expressed interest in building a mall at the site of an abandoned car dealership.

Two developers are currently working towards building a new shopping center on the southeast corner of Firestone Boulevard and Garfield Avenue. The developers, BlackRidge Real Estate Group and Catellus, have proposed to build a new 64,076 square foot shopping mall at the site of the currently vacant Gonzales Chrysler dealership.

“The developer has indicated that they are in active negotiations with several perspective anchor tenants,” said Steve Lefever, South Gate’s Director of Community Development. “They prefer not to release names until discussions are concluded.”

The project still in the preparation stage and is expected to go before the planning commission on August 21, 2012.

“The project is in the midst of the planning,” said Lefever. “A traffic study is nearing completion and a more comprehensive environmental analysis is also underway.”
