Authorities Arrest Suspect in Connection to Lynwood Homicide

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) has arrested a suspect who they believe is responsible for the killing of Basel Hijaz, age 26, during an attempted 2012 robbery in Lynwood.

"Our homicide bureau was in charge of the investigation,” said Captain Joseph M. Gooden of the Sheriff’s Century Station to Patch outside Lynwood City Hall on Tuesday, May 20. “They have who they believe to be the shooter in custody.”

The fatal shooting reportedly took place at approximately 3:42 p.m. in the 10900 block of Atlantic Avenue on March 18, 2012. It is believed that it resulted from a botched attempt by two suspects who tried to rob both Hijaz and his Father at gunpoint.

The Hijaz's were both inside of a parked vehicle at a Lynwood local strip mall when the suspects approached them. Hijaz allegedly got out of the vehicle and came to the aid of his Father, who was being beaten with a gun by the suspect.

However, Hijaz was shot during his attempt to help his Father, and declared dead at a nearby hospital that same day. His Father survived the attack.

The LASD has not release anymore information about this latest incident.
