LONG BEACH (CNS) - The coroner today identified the person killed when a 22-year-old motorist, who was later arrested, triggered a multi-vehicle crash on the Long Beach (710) Freeway that left one person dead and four others injured.
She was Barbara Laing, 29, of Alhambra, coroner's Capt. John Kades said. Laing's autopsy is pending, Kades said.
The crash on the northbound Long Beach Freeway, south of the Artesia (91) Freeway was reported to the CHP at 12:50 a.m. Saturday, according to a California Highway Patrol statement.
The 22-year-old motorist, driving a 1988 Chrysler, failed to stop for traffic that was stopped and rear-ended a 2005 Toyota, which then rear-ended a 2004 Ford and a 2008 Peterbilt truck, according to the statement.
The Chrysler continued north along the side of the Toyota and then struck the left side of the Ford. The driver of the Chrysler, a 22-year-old woman from Wilmington, suffered major injuries. Paramedics rushed her to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
She was later arrested, according to a statement from the CHP. It was not immediately known what charges she will face.
The driver in the 2005 Toyota, a 27-year-old Wilmington woman, also suffered major injuries and was also transported to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. Her passenger, a 29-year-old woman from Alhambra, died at the scene.
The driver in the 2004 Ford, a 21-year-old man from Lynwood, suffered moderate injuries and the driver in the 2008 Peterbuilt truck, a 27-year-old man from Los Angeles, escaped with only minor injuries.
