The Fire Department’s Shakey Quakey Earthquake Simulator will also be available for attendees. While it’s a favorite for kids and adults alike, the Shakey Quakey Earthquake Trailer is intended to put people through a simulated earthquake, complete with falling objects and sound. The trailer can simulate up to an 8.0 quake.

“This event is like a big community workshop on public safety,” said Deborah Jackson, director of the City of Lynwood’s Public Relations Department. “Residents come out and enjoy a day of networking with personnel from the Sheriff’s, the Fire Department and from the City. It’s a day to come out and ask questions and get the answers that you’re looking for when it comes to any public safety concerns that you have. It’s also a community builder. By bringing residents and personnel from the Sheriff’s and Fire, you’re building a bridge, too.”

The event will also be stage for recruitment for the City’s Neighborhood Block Watch Program. There are currently 50 block watch neighborhood groups, but more are needed. “The Block Watch Program is always recruiting,” Jackson said. “People who want to help keep their neighborhoods or blocks safe, they can sign up to be a block watch captain. Neighborhoods want to be a part of the block watch program, but sometimes they need one person to step up to the plate and start the program, and they will follow. Our neighborhood block watch programs are very active and very strong. It’s a successful program that has proven to help keep blocks safer because you’re working with your neighbors to keep each other safe.”

The City of Lynwood’s 2013 Public Safety Fair is free and open to the public. Yvonne Burke/Ham Park is located at 11832 Atlantic Ave., Lynwood, CA 90262. For more information, call Deborah Jackson at (310) 603-0220 Ext. 501.
