South Gate Council Approves Dog Ordinance for Park

City officials hope to have a dog park built within Hollydale Regional Park by the summer.

On Tuesday, the South Gate City Council voted unanimously in favor of an ordinance that would allow dogs within specifically designated areas in municipal parks. This was done in preparation for the soon to be built dog park at Hollydale Regional Park.

“We are currently finishing our designs for a dog park in Hollydale [Regional] Park,” said Paul Adams, director of parks and recreation, to the council.

The ordinance also provides dog owners with a safeguard against citations as they walk through Hollydale Regional Park in order to arrive to a designated area.

“[This] also allows the dogs to walk along the pathways in order to get to the dog park,” said Adams. “So we don’t have people getting citations as they walk their dogs.”

Close to a year ago, The park is expected to be a 4,000 square foot off-leash dog park.

Horses were the only other animals mentioned by name in the ordinance. This was because the same rule applies to people who  bring them to the public horse arena in Hollydale Regional Park.

The dog park is expected to be finished by some point during the summer of 2013.
