South Gate Council Incumbents Delighted With 'Unofficial' Election Results

Bill De Witt and Gil Hurtado are expected to retake their positions.

The South Gate Municipal Elections closed yesterday and the "unofficial" results that followed gave the city council's incumbents much to be happy about. South Gate Mayor Bill De Witt and Vice-Mayor Gil Hurtado both tallied a comfortable lead over their challenger, Ricardo Reyes.

“We thank the residents and voters of the city South Gate for their support,” said De Witt, who ran on a slate with Hurtado. “We will keep the city on an even financial footing.”

Hurtado also expressed his joy at the results, while mentioning the importance of facing the local economic concerns.

“It puts us into a position where two people, Mr. De Witt and myself, with experience and knowledge can continue move the city the forward,” said Hurtado.

Patch has yet to make contact with Reyes. However, the incumbents stated that both received congratulatory phone calls from their challenger. The latter gesture was described as “gracious" by De Witt, and “admirable" by Hurtado.

De Witt also added that he hopes to meet with the former candidate next week.

“I mentioned that I would like to sit down and talk to him,” said De Witt. “Learn a little bit more about him.”

and the election still needs to be certified after the ballots are verified by the Los Angeles County Registrar's Office to be made official. Patch was told by Carmen Avalos, South Gate City Clerk, that a total tally was expected to take two weeks.
