Willowbrook Gunman Still Holed Up as Police Close In

By City News Service

WILLOWBROOK (CNS) - A Los Angeles police officer and a probation officer were shot yesterday during a probation search in the unincorporated Willowbrook area and a Special Weapons and Tactics team surrounded the house where the suspect was believed to be holed up.

The suspect was believed to have barricaded himself in the house in the 2200 block of East 117th Street, near the border with Lynwood and the Glen Anderson (105) Freeway, which was surrounded by a dozens of law enforcement officers, according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Christopher No and Cmdr. Andrew Smith.

The officer was shot in the face and taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, where he was listed in critical but stable condition and was to undergo surgery, Smith said.

Family members who came to the hospital said they thought the officer would survive the shooting, according to KCAL9.

The probation officer was shot in a leg and treated at the scene, No said.

The shooting occurred at 5:29 p.m., said Officer Sara Faden of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Section.

A citywide tactical alert was issued, allowing officers to be kept on duty after the end of their scheduled shifts. It was later downgraded to include only the LAPD's South Bureau, police said.

Homes around the house where the suspect was believed to be barricaded were evacuated after the shooting, No said. It was unclear how many people were affected.

A SigAlert was issued for the eastbound Glen Anderson Freeway at Wilmington Avenue.

Smith said there appears to be no connection with this shooting and the shooting of two LAPD detectives outside the Wilshire Station in the Mid-City area.

Two people, possibly a husband and wife, were removed tonight from a backhouse to the rear of the home where the suspect is holed up, reported KCAL9.
