Authorities Continue to Investigate Fatal Lynwood Shooting Involving Deputy

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department provided a brief update to the Lynwood City Council on the investigation surrounding the shooting death.

The shooting that led to the death of Edgar Villareal, 25, on April 8, is being investigated by several law enforcement organizations, as result of it having occurred after an alleged gunfight with a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) deputy.

“When a deputy discharges his or her weapon it is a very transparent and long investigation,” said Captain Joseph M. Gooden from the LASD Century Station in a short presentation to the Lynwood City Council.

The case is being investigated by not only LASD homicide detectives, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, LASD internal affairs, and the Office of Independent Review, stated Capt. Gooden.

The shooting took place on the 4000 block of Agnes Street on Tuesday. A deputy allegedly made an attempt to contact the now deceased Villareal at approximately 1:39 p.m., who is accused by the LASD of pulling a gun and shooting at the deputy.

“We need to do a very judicious and thorough account,” said Capt. Gooden, who further added that it was still unknown as to why the suspect had a gun and failed to listen to the officers. “I can assure you, that is in fact going to be done.”

Villareal was taken to a hospital after sustaining his injuries, and was eventually declared dead. The deputy involved in the shooting was not injured.
