Local authorities have informed South Gate – Lynwood Patch Latino that a big rig has overturned on the I-710 near Firestone Boulevard.
The South Gate Police Department (SGPD) was the first agency to notify Patcg about the incident. However, they explained that the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD)and California Highway Patrol (CHP) were in charge of the situation.
"[The big rig] was carrying liquid asphalt,” said the supervising fire dispatcher of the LACoFD via phone. “Fifteen hundred gallons of the product have been dumped into the freeway.”
The fire dispatcher, who would only give out his last name, Gougis, further added that a “unknown amount” of asphalt did access one storm drain. However, that operations on scene mitigated the spread.
Gougis also confirmed that some people were hurt because of this accident.
“Three patients with minor injuries have transferred to the hospital,” said Gougis.
The CHP could not be reached for comment on the situation. On the other hand, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has issued the following warning to drivers.
“[The I-710] closed to northbound traffic in Firestone Blvd. in South gate due to an accident, motorist are advised to use an alternative route.”
Patch will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
