Deputy Involved Shooting in Paramount Under Investigation

By City News Service

PARAMOUNT (CNS) - Investigations were underway today into a fatal deputy- involved shooting during a narcotics arrest in Paramount.

No deputies were injured in the shooting, which occurred around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 7200 block of Richfield Street, near Garfield Avenue, according to officials at the sheriff's Lakewood Station.

The suspect was taken from the scene to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said Deputy Don Walker of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

Deputies were attempting to make a narcotics arrest when the suspect became uncooperative and, during the ensuing struggle, tried to grab a deputy's sidearm, a sheriff's Homicide Bureau detective told a news photographer at the scene.

A second deputy fired on the suspect to protect his partner, the detective said.

The shooting was being investigated by the sheriff's department as well as the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office and the County Office of Independent Review, as is standard in such cases.
