Lynwood Homicide Rate Increases Slightly

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department tells Patch that residents should not worry about the rise.

The city of Lynwood recorded 8 homicides in 2012, which was two more than in 2011. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which polices Lynwood, told Patch that the increase was too small for it to cause any worry.

“Homicides come and go,” said Lieutenant Ernie Chavez of the LASD Century Station. “There should be no cause for alarm.”

The LASD told Patch that “one homicide is too many” and that they are focusing on tackling some areas in order to decrease the rate.

“This is something that were going to pay attention to,” said Lt. Chavez. “We are trying to reduce the number of gang violence.”

According to Lt. Chavez, gang violence has high tendency to lead to homicides, as well as other violent crimes. For example, not so much gang on gang violence, but a lot of  botched robberies that have led to shooting deaths.

“It was more of a robbery pattern than anything else,” said Lt. Chavez.  “We are trying to bring awareness to local businesses.”

Part of the outreach to local businesses includes tips on surviving unpleasant situations with deadly weapons.

“We tell {the business owners] that better to be a good witness than anything else,” concluded Lt. Chavez.
