Lynwood, LASD Launch 'See Something, Say Something' Campaign

Officials say that crime in Lynwood is on the decline, but that work remains to be done.

Lynwood and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s (LASD) Century Station are getting ready to launch the ‘See Something, Say Something’ Campaign. The slogan, which was borrowed from the Department of Homeland Security, is supposed to encourage residents to notify law enforcement if they happen to witness something suspicious.

“What we want people to know is that if they see something, anything, that’s not right, then we want them to call us,” said Lieutenant Ernie Chavez of the LASD Century Station, in a statement. “We want people to know that no matter how insignificant they think something might be to us [law enforcement], if it’s significant to them, then it’s going to be significant to us, too.”

The LASD needs the public’s help to better patrol and safeguard Lynwood.

“Only you are the expert of your residence, of your property, you are the expert of your neighborhoods, not us,” said Lt. Chavez. “So if you see something, then we need you to say something right away.”

The organizers of this campaign hope that stronger communication with residents will help put a stop to vehicle thefts, which is the only criminal activity that has continued to rise by as much 119 percent this year, stated a recent city press release.

The LASD is confident that vehicle thefts can be deterred if residents take precautions.

“It’s the area that we need to focus on right now,” said Captain Joseph Gooden of the LASD in a recent council meeting. “Because these are crimes that can be prevented just by locking your car.”

Residents can make general suspicious reports by calling the Century Sheriff’s Station’s at (323) 568-4800.
