Two Apprehended in Botched Carjacking

The stolen vehicle was abandoned in South Gate.

On Friday, at approximately 1:22 a.m., South Gate – Lynwood Patch Latino received a news tip from a reader via Facebook that inquired about the presence of police near the intersection of of Southern and Calden Avenues.

“The [Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department] (LASD) was in pursuit of a stolen vehicle that came into our city,” said a spokesperson of the South Gate Police Department (SGPD). “At some point the vehicle was abandoned by the suspects."

The LASD was able to arrest one of the suspects fairly quickly, but had to set up a perimeter to apprehend the second.

“At some point they called up a canine unit and their helicopter was up in the air,” added the SGPD spokesperson.  “The suspect was ultimately taken into custody.”

The suspects are also thought to have been involved in a vehicle collision with a parked while driving the stolen car, according to the SGPD, which wrote a accident report.

During this operation the SGPD acted in an assisting role, and was not able to provide Patch with any more information.
