City Council Denies Permit for Recycling Center Again

The controversial recycling facility still has a lot of opposition from neighboring properties.

The South Gate City Council unanimously denied providing a recycling collection facility, situated at the parking lot of a shopping center on 3223 Firestone Boulevard, with a necessary permit

showed up once again in a large group to oppose it during Tuesday evening’s city council meeting. The opposers of this center believe that the facility will make the parking problem in the area worse as well as encourage health hazards related to waste.

This opposition appears to have convinced all the members of the council.

“I think the city is interested in recycling,” said Mayor Bill De Witt. “[However], we have seen a lot of concerns from the area about this particular location.”

Vice-Mayor Gil Hurtado concurred and asked the applicants to perhaps consider other parts of town.

“There are probably better locations in the city that the applicant might want to consider,” said Hurtado.

The portable beige recycling facility, which will focus on plastics,  It also received the endorsement of the planning commission for a permit in its second try and with some restrictions.

Those involved with the recycling center have also  already invested $75,000 on the property alone.

Alex Sarkisyan, an operational manager for the owner, Minas Chirishyan, of the recycling facility, told Patch that they are still weighing their options in regards to continue to push for the permit in this location or not. 

“We have not decided yet,” said Sarkisyan.
