Council Votes in Favor of Removing Traffic Control Devices on Firestone

New traffic signals will be installed at a different intersection on Firestone Boulevard to replace those that will be removed.

Last night, the South Gate City Council voted in favor of removing both traffic control devices and marked cross-walks that were located at two intersections of Firestone Boulevard: Burke Avenue and Annetta Avenue. They will be replaced as soon as the new traffic signals at the intersection of Hildreth Avenue on Firestone Boulevard are installed.

Marco Antonio Hernandez, a resident of South Gate who lives near to the area where the changes will be made, expressed his worries to the council.

“ I am concerned about this,” said Hernandez. “If you remove these devices from the intersections would that create any hazards for my family or myself?”

Mohammad Mostahkami, Director of Public works for the city of South Gate, ensured the resident and those present that the move was completely safe.

“All the safety precautions have been taken an there wont be an issue,” affirmed Mostahkami.

The City Council also assured anyone with concerns that this would be a safe change and that the traffic devices were being simply being moved over by “one block.”

Mayor Bill De Witt was the only member of the City Council to abstain on this motion due to a potential conflict of interest. The current Mayor owns property near to the area where the changes will be made.

The City Council also voted unanimously for a resolution that reaffirmed the city’s commitment to a "transparent" and "open" municipal government by complying with the Ralph Brown Act.
