South Gate City Council to Consider Traffic Restrictions for Trucks on Garfield

The limitations include weight and night use of the road.

Today’s City Council meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. and will take up several topics of interest to South Gate. Here are two of the most important happenings on the agenda:

1. The South Gate City Council will conduct a public hearing where they will consider introducing an ordinance that would restrict truck traffic on Garfield Avenue. The limitations include prohibiting the usage of the street by trucks with a weight of over 60,000 pounds as well as overnight.

The agenda item also states that city staff will also be directed to continue monitoring truck traffic within a portion of Garfield Avenue that has a lot of residences.  Businesses with trucks will continue to be asked to decrease their use of this portion, which is located between Southern Avenue and the South Gate city limit.

2. The South Gate City Council will consider approving the City’s 2012 Bicycle Transportation Plan. The city states that this plan hopes to improve pedestrian and bicycle traffic within South Gate. The plan took 18 months to prepare and is said to have the input of both city staff and members of the public.
