South Gate Unemployment Rate Grows

The number of unemployed people in South Gate rose by 1 percent.

The city of South Gate experienced an increase in the number of registered unemployed residents this past July. According to the Employment Development Department (EDD), the number of unemployed people in South Gate during the month of July was 6,200. This was 400 more than what was recorded for June.

The number of unemployed residents is also now higher when compared to the 4,100 South Gate reisdents that were registered by the EDD as unemployed last January.

As result of this, the local unemployment rate showed an increase by rising from 14.1 percent in June to 15.1 percent in July.

While in Los Angeles County, the unemployment index remained unchanged. The rate was 11.2 percent for June and again in July. The county still has more than 540,000 people without jobs.

Statewide, the July unemployment rate was recorded to be at 10.7 percent, which was also the same rate for the month the prior month. This percentage represents close to 2 million unemployed people in California.

Close by, Lynwood registered an unemployment rate of 18.6 percent , Huntington Park's rate stood at 17.6 percent, Paramount at 17.2 percent, Cudahy at 16.5 percent, while Downey recorded the lowest with a 9.6 percent.
