Police Veteran Taking Over as South Gate Chief

On Tuesday, the City Council appointed Capt. Randy Davis as the new chief of police for the City of South Gate.

The will have a new chief of police at the dawn of the new year. Capt. Randy Davis, a 20-year resident and veteran of the South Gate Police Department, will be succeeding Chief George Troxcil on Jan. 1.

Davis expressed pride after his official appointment.

“I am truly honored to be selected,” said Davis. “I look forward to being with this police department for the next several years, and to working with the city.”

City Council members expressed their full support for Davis, while underscoring the competitive selection process he navigated before he was offered the position.

“My responsibility is to make sure that the chief of police is the best one that has gone through the process,” said Councilmember Gil Hurtado. “This is the most qualified person.”

Davis’ competent manner was also praised by supporters.

“You always have been very professional,” said . “I know you will do a very good job.”

Troxcil, who is also serving as interim city manager, was celebrated for his longtime service, and helping out the city despite his retirement in 2000.

“Thank you very much for coming back from retirement and doing this favor for us,” said Mayor Davila.

Davis thanked everyone for their praise and expressed excitement at having the opportunity to continue to live and work in South Gate.  

“I can’t think of another city I would like to work with,” said Davis. “I am going to spend the rest of my life here.”
