Vandalism Eyed as Reason for Power Outage in Hollydale

Outage is believed to have been caused by illegal tampering of electrical cabinet, South Gate officials said.

The Public Works Department of the city of South Gate was alerted about an electrical outage in parts of several streets in the Hollydale area at 8 a.m. Monday.

A team of electricians was dispatched to assess and fix the situation and the Public Works Department confirmed that the streetlights were fixed as of 12 p.m. Monday.

“The electrical cabinet lock hasp was cut, and one the main breakers for that area was shut off,” said Osie Harrell, electrical and general maintenance superintendent for the City of South Gate. “From what it appears bolt cutters were used to cut the hasp and get access to the cabinet.”

“We have had cases where people try to utilize the darkness to do things that the light would otherwise expose,” said Harrell, “but I can’t really say [why the damage was done].”

The South Gate Police Department was notified and patrols are expected to keep an eye out, said Harrell. The streetlights affected in Hollydale were mostly in and around Garfield Avenue, Idaho Avenue, Monroe Avenue and Gardendale Street.
