Watch: South Gate City Council Candidates Forum

The 90-minute February 25 forum hosted by the League of Women Voters and Patch covered topics ranging from Walmart to South Gate's sales tax rates to city economic development.

To connect South Gate voters with the contenders in the City Council race, the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles (LWVLA), the League Women Voters of Whittier, and the South Gate Patch Latino will hosted a candidates forum Feb. 25.

All three candidates showed up to participate in the 90-minute forum, which will give the community an opportunity to explore key issues in the race.  Issues included: Walmart, the city's sale tax measure, education, gun control, the possibility of contracting out the city's Police Department and more.

Candidates are vying for two open City Council seats on the March 5 ballot. Two are seeking re-election, while one is making a first run for public office.

The candidates are Bill De Witt (Incumbent); Gil Hurtado (Incumbent) and Ricardo Reyes.

The forum has been broken up into multiple videos, with a short video devoted to the candidates answer to each question from the moderator or the audience.  The introduction and the candidates' closing statements can also be viewed above.

Did any one hear about the teenager who got run over by the South Gate Police Officer patrol car yesterday. Is the kid okay? Please send info on the accident.

Tom, Just call the Watch Commander. When he or she is not busy they will be happy to give you the information as long as legal issues don't prevent them from doing so. Our South Gate Police Dept. number is 323 563 5436. If dispatch cannot answer your question, ask for the watch commander. Talk to him/her or leave a message. You will get an answer back within the hour. I have been doing this for 10 years and it works. Virginia from Hollydale.
