By City News Service

LONG BEACH (CNS) - Cal State Long Beach was locked down late this afternoon when someone reported they saw a man with a gun, but it turned out to be  "just a mistake'' -- the gun turned out to be a cellphone, said Sgt. David Marander of the Long Beach Police Department.

The report of an armed subject came from Cal State Long Beach's Twitter page, saying . "An ARMED SUBJECT is in the area of Palo Verde Avenue and parking lot 9. Evacuate the area if able, seek shelter if you are unable to evacuate.''

A few minutes later the a tweet from the university's account said.

"The situation on campus is all clear. There is no threat on campus. Classes will be held as scheduled and business to resume as usual.''

"It's probably better to be safe than sorry,'' Marander said.
