Lynwood 2011-2012 Graduation Rates Show Increase

Both Lynwood high schools recorded a double digit increase from one year to the other.

The latest graduation rate numbers show that Lynwood Unified School District’s high schools recorded double-digit graduation rate increases for the 2011-12 school year.

The graduation rate at Lynwood High School for the 2011-2012 academic year increased to 78.5 percent from the 67.9 percent of 2010-2011. The 2011-2012 graduation rate at Firebaugh High School stood at 80.5 percent, which was more than the 69.4 percent of 2010-2011.

Members of the LUSD board of education expressed delight over the latest increase.

“This is great news because it means that fewer Lynwood students are falling through the cracks,” said Maria G. Lopez, LUSD Board of Education President, in a statement.

The LUSD credits the latest increase to various teaching strategies and programs, among them Lynwood Unified’s Achieving Greatness Initiative. The latter is a program that helps teachers in utilizing data to deliver a more personalized student instruction.

“We’re taking a comprehensive approach to the education of our students,” said Edward Velasquez, LUSD Superintendent. “However, our work is not done until every one of our students earn their diplomas and reach their dreams.”
