Lynwood Unified Prepares for New Common Core Standards

Several schools within the district have participated in a pilot testing program geared at facilitating the transition.

As California begins its transition to the new Common Core Standards, the standards that will give educators across the country with specifics as to what students are expected to be learning in the classroom, the Lynwood Unified School District (LUSD) has been preparing faculty and students pilot programs in the hopes for a successful switch to the new state standardized testing system for 2014-15 academic year.

This past month, students from Lincoln, Mark Twain, Helen Keller and Roosevelt elementary schools took part in this pilot program. Around 10 percent of schools in California were chosen to take part in a testing program.

“I’m glad that we were able to participate in this preliminary testing,” said Edward Velasquez, LUSD superintendent, in statement. “We will be better prepared to meet the technological and curricular demands of the Common Core Standards.”

These new standards, which have been adopted by 45 states, also aim to help students collaborate, analyze and solve problems, while using technology.

“This is a big shift in education, but it is a positive one that will better prepare our students to be successful,” said Maria G. Lopez, LUSD Board of Education President, in statement. “I’m glad that our District has been ahead of the curve.”

Lynwood Middle School will also take part in a practice test in late May. The latter is so the district can better assess the changes in at the secondary school level.

The LUSD expects to continue to prepare for the implementation of the Common Core Standards through the summer, with trainings for teachers.
