Ontario Fury Score Impressive Win in Debut

The Fury, based in Ontario, is playing their first season. The team fields a professional and reserve team with players from all over Southern California.

The Ontario Fury made an impressive debut Oct. 26, defeating the visiting Toros Mexico 16-8 in a preseason game at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif.

The Fury, an expansion franchise in the Professional Arena Soccer League, drew 5,285 fans for the first-ever indoor soccer game at the Ontario arena. Ontario will open its regular season with a game that will kick off at 4 p.m. Nov. 10 against the Dallas Sidekicks.

In the Oct. 26 game, Ontario jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 5:13 of the game, and never looked back, building a 6-2 lead after the first quarter, and an 8-3 lead at the half. Mexico rallied in the third quarter, closing the score to 10-6, before the Fury pulled away, scoring five of the game’s last six goals.

Zach Bautista, who is originally from Orange, Calif., led the Fury with three goals on the night, including two goals in 55 seconds in the fourth quarter to close out Ontario’s scoring. Mexico got five goals from Gerardo Villa in the losing effort.

Also pitching in for the Fury were Tino Nunez (Long Beach, Calif.), who had two goals and one assist in the game. Brazilian born Tiguinho had one goal and four assists for Ontario, while former San Diego Sockers’ star Majell Aterado had a pair of goals for the Fury, which fired 36 shots on Mexico goalie Obie Clibourne.

Brazilian goaltender Sanaldo got the victory for Ontario, stopping 16 of 19 shots in 37:30 of playing time. Manny Kaji, who played at Citrus College and Cal State Northridge, stopped five of 10 shots faced in relief.
