Four $500 scholarships will be given out to high school seniors.

Members of the , a local service club, are encouraging local high school seniors to apply for its merit-based college scholarships. The club will be giving out four $500 scholarships to seniors picked after completing an application.

Prior to this year, only seniors who had attended and for the past two years were eligible. This year, the club decided to include any current high school senior who has lived in South Gate for at least two years.

“We wanted to get a broad section of students,” said Erika Morales, a member of the South Gate Women’s Club.

The scholarships are not just for straight-A students who hope to get into highly competitive universities. The club also wants applications from motivated students with a desire to learn a trade.

"Every child is not necessarily college material,” said Naomi Nixon, president of the South Gate Women’s Club. “Some of [the students] want to go to trade schools and they cost money.”

Tuition at any institution of higher learning can be expensive and club members, who have been through the economic hurdles, are happy to be helping the students.

“Being a college graduate, I know the value of every penny,” said Morales. “We want to make sure that [those who are] college bound are not discouraged because of the price.”

Interested students should email the southfatewomensclub@gmail.com to receive an application or more information. No minimum grade-point average is required and the application requires short answers to questions and an essay. The deadline for submitting an application is April 15.
