South Gate Women's Club Crowns Next Azalea Queen

South Gate resident Barbara Brown was crowned as this year's Azalea Queen during a Sunday dinner sponsored by the South Gate Women's Club.

The continued on Sunday evening with the coronation of this year's Azalea Queen. 

Barbara Brown, a South Gate resident of 46 years, was named Azalea Queen during a coronation and dinner at South Gate Park.

"My knees were shaking up there," said Brown, when asked about being crowned. "I was excited.”

To be considered as an Azalea Queen, a person must be 55 years old or older, live in South Gate and have at least 20 years of history of service to the community of South Gate, said Naomi Nixon, president of the

Unfortunately, there were no nominations for a Grand Marshall this year, the male equivalent of this honor. 

The Azalea Festival at the runs to Sunday, March 25, with events that include a youth talent show on Tuesday and a carnival Thursday through Sunday. Check out the full schedule .
